The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, has reinforced its commitment to leadership continuity and institutional excellence with the maiden Leadership and Legacy Roundtable, a gathering that united past Branch Chairmen, Engineering elders, Permanent Secretaries, senior professionals, and key stakeholders to reflect on the Branch’s remarkable journey and chart a course for its future. The event, held at Shishi’s Cuisine, GRA, Abeokuta, was organised by the Branch Chairman and Chairman of the Forum of NSE Branch Chairmen, Engr. Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, FNSE, as one of the closing activities of his administration. Participants hailed the initiative as a historic first for the Branch, describing it as a visionary platform that institutionalises dialogue between past and present leaders while preserving the values and traditions that have shaped the Branch over the years.
Welcoming participants, Engr. Idowu said the Roundtable represented a meeting of the Branch’s past, present, and future, stressing that sustainable leadership is built on continuity rather than personal accomplishments. According to him, every administration owes a responsibility to consolidate existing achievements and leave the institution stronger than it met it. He reviewed the accomplishments of his administration, highlighting the modernization of the Branch Secretariat, expanded technical and professional development programmes, enhanced welfare initiatives for members and bereaved families, the establishment and strengthening of the Young Engineers Forum, improved visibility through strategic branding and media engagement, stronger collaboration with government institutions, execution of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), partnerships with private organisations, and sustained advocacy for quality engineering infrastructure and greater participation of professional engineers in governance and public policy.
The event soon transformed into a celebration of the administration of Engr. Idowu, as speakers took turns to commend what they described as a transformational era in the history of the Abeokuta Branch. While acknowledging the invaluable foundations laid by previous Chairmen, participants observed that the outgoing administration had distinguished itself through innovation, strategic leadership, and exceptional performance. They noted that Engr. Idowu’s willingness to learn from the experiences of his predecessors, combined with his youthful energy, inclusive leadership style, effective stakeholder engagement, and passion for institutional development, had produced remarkable results that elevated the Branch to unprecedented levels of visibility and influence. Many described the Branch as a model of excellence within the Nigerian Society of Engineers, citing its vibrant programmes, strengthened partnerships, improved infrastructure, youth development initiatives, and enhanced public relevance.
Speaking on behalf of the Elders Forum, Engr. Micheal Kayode Adeniji, FNSE, praised the Leadership and Legacy Roundtable as a commendable initiative that would preserve the Branch’s institutional memory and deepen collaboration across generations of leaders. The most senior Past Chairman in attendance, Engr. Oyewole Lateef Oyewunmi, FNSE, reflected on the sacrifices that shaped the Branch and urged future leaders to remain committed to professionalism, integrity, accountability, and selfless service. Other past Chairmen and engineering elders expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded during the outgoing administration, describing Engr. Idowu as a humble and consultative leader who consistently recognised the contributions of his predecessors, sought their counsel, and united members behind a common vision for growth. They encouraged the incoming administration to sustain the momentum and continue building on the solid foundation that has now been laid.
The Roundtable also received goodwill messages from prominent engineering leaders, including the Vice President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Engr. Olu Ogunduyile, FNSE, who applauded the initiative as a best-practice model for leadership succession, institutional continuity, and knowledge transfer within professional organisations. One of the highlights of the occasion was the presentation of appreciation plaques to past Branch Chairmen and distinguished engineering elders in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the development of the Branch and the engineering profession. The colourful ceremony underscored the Branch’s culture of honouring service, celebrating excellence, and acknowledging those whose sacrifices laid the foundation for its continued progress.
As the programme concluded, participants unanimously expressed confidence in the future of Engr. Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, wishing him greater success in higher leadership responsibilities within the engineering profession and beyond. They described his tenure as one that redefined leadership through vision, innovation, inclusiveness, and measurable impact, while significantly raising the profile of the Abeokuta Branch at both state and national levels. According to them, the administration has set a new standard against which future administrations will be measured. They expressed optimism that the values of excellence, continuity, mentorship, and purposeful service championed during his tenure would remain enduring pillars of the Branch. The Leadership and Legacy Roundtable was widely celebrated as a historic milestone that not only honoured the past but also laid a solid foundation for an even brighter future for the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abeokuta Branch.
