The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, has lauded the Ogun State Government, led by Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, for inaugurating a 15-member administrative team for the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OGERC), describing the move as a positive advancement toward actualizing the provisions of the Ogun State Electricity Law (Bill No. 017/OG/2024).
In a statement by the Branch Chairman, Engr. Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, FNSE, the body referenced its earlier letter dated March 13, 2025 (Ref: NSEAbk/Sec/26/043), which urged the prompt activation of the State’s electricity framework following the signing of the law. The Branch noted that the inauguration reflects responsiveness by the State Government and reinforces its resolve to improve electricity regulation, enhance power supply, and promote fair and transparent tariff systems.
The Branch further highlighted that the implementation timeline remains critical, citing the directive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (Order No. NERC/2024/165), which stipulates that regulatory authority should transfer to the state commission from December 24, 2024, with full transition expected by June 23, 2025. According to the engineers, any delay in completing the institutional and operational structures could expose the State to regulatory inefficiencies, including gaps in consumer protection, licensing processes, tariff oversight, and dispute resolution mechanisms.
While acknowledging the progress made, the NSE Abeokuta Branch called on the Ogun State Government to fast-track the remaining phases of implementation. These include ensuring that all statutory institutions under the law are fully established and operational, providing clear timelines for the rollout of the State electricity market, and promoting inclusive stakeholder participation throughout the implementation process.
The Branch emphasized that completing these actions promptly will unlock the intended economic and industrial benefits of the law, such as improved power reliability, stronger investor confidence, and better service delivery to both residents and industries within Ogun State.
Additionally, the engineers underscored the importance of professionalism in the execution of the reform, urging the government to engage only competent, experienced, and duly registered professional engineers in managing and driving the technical and regulatory aspects of the sector. This, they noted, is crucial for ensuring efficiency, credibility, and long-term sustainability.
The NSE Abeokuta Branch reiterated its commitment to supporting the Ogun State Government with expert knowledge and professional collaboration to ensure the successful delivery of the State’s electricity reform agenda.
