FCE ABEOKUTA GETS NEW PROVOST.

A new chapter was formally opened at the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta on Monday, 14th September, 2026, as Dr. Joseph Bankole Filani assumed office as the College’s 7th substantive Provost in a colourful handover ceremony that drew dignitaries from within and outside the College.

The event, according to Mr Anthony Ogundipe of Public Relations Directorate of the college held at the Provost’s Office and the College Quadrangle, marked the end of the tenure of the 6th Provost, Dr. R. A. Soyele, and the beginning of Dr. Filani’s leadership.

The Ceremony commenced with the arrival of invited guests, followed by the Provost-designate, Dr. Filani, and his wife, who were received with a ceremonial inspection of the Guards of Honour.

Proceedings began with the National Anthem, an opening prayer by Mr. Lawal, formal introductions, and a briefing by the Registrar, Mr O.O Tonade.

In his address, the Registrar Mr Tonade recounted the transparent process that led to the new appointment. He noted that the selection process began about six months ago, with 14 applications received and nine candidates shortlisted in line with Federal Government guidelines.

Paying glowing tribute to his predecessor, the outgoing Provost, Dr. R. A. Soyele, expressed profound gratitude to God, his family, the College community, past Provosts, the Governing Council and Management for their support during his tenure.

Describing the handover as a “defining moment,” Dr. Soyele reflected on the lessons of leadership and service. He urged staff and students to uphold the rules and regulations guiding the institution, stressing that “effective leadership thrives on peace, discipline and commitment to progress.”

In a symbolic gesture of welcome, the Department of Fine and Applied Arts presented a portrait to the incoming Provost.

Significance of the occasion was the formal signing of the handover notes, signifying the official transfer of authority. Dr. Filani thereafter delivered his acceptance speech, followed by special prayers led by Rev. Koya.

Other events included the ceremonial hoisting of the National and College flags, accompanied by a parade at the Provost’s Office Quadrangle.

Present at the ceremony including the Deputy Provost (Administration), Dr. Akinyele; the Registrar; the Bursar; the College Librarian; members of the Governing Council; Deans; Directors; Union Leaders; the Dean of Students; and other senior stakeholders of the College.

The event concluded with the departure of the outgoing Provost, Dr. Soyele, and his wife, Mrs. B.A Soyele, amid applause and appreciation for their years of service.

With the assumption of office by Dr. J. B. Filani, the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, now looks forward to a new era of growth, innovation and academic excellence.
