By Nigeria and the European Union have pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation in democracy, migration, security and sustainable development.
This was during a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot in Abuja.
A statement by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, says the meeting focused on Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, developments in West Africa, and preparations for high-level Nigeria-EU engagements.
On elections, both sides stressed the need for inclusive, peaceful and credible polls to promote democratic stability.
The EU Ambassador disclosed that the bloc will deploy an expert mission, rather than a conventional observation mission, for the 2027 elections, and will sustain support to INEC, the media, civil society and political parties.
Both diplomats also reviewed cooperation on migration management, combating human trafficking and formalizing a readmission agreement, as well as clean energy and climate action.
Similarly, they reaffirmed support for multilateralism and agreed to maintain regular consultations through diplomatic channels.
